BEWARE OF THE SILENT KILLER

Posted on November 8, 2018

Here is what you need to know about carbon monoxide (CO).

You can’t see it. You can’t smell it. But it can kill you. In fact, you have probably heard CO referred to as the silent killer. According to the Center for Disease Control & Prevention, from 2010-2015 there were 2,244 deaths contributed to unintentional carbon monoxide poisoning. The overwhelming majority of those deaths occurred during the winter months of November through February, when furnaces and other heat-producing equipment are in frequent use.

In fact, November is Carbon Monoxide Awareness Month and your friends at Armstrong Plumbing, Air & Electric want to help you make sure your home is CO-proof. First on the list is to give us a call for a complete heating system tune-up. Our licensed Lubbock HVAC professionals will inspect every inch of your system, and make sure everything is functioning the way it should be. This includes burners, fans, exhausts and ductwork that can contribute to CO leaking into your house, or building up to a dangerous level in confined or poorly-ventilated spaces. Carbon monoxide is a natural byproduct of home appliances that use natural gas, propane, charcoal, wood or oil. We will also check out these appliances to make sure they are operating efficiently and safely.

We can also check your CO detectors and ensure they are working and properly placed. If you are performing your own maintenance on your CO detectors, make sure you place one on each floor of your home, near bedrooms and near your furnace. Change your batteries whenever you adjust your clocks for Daylight Saving Time.

Another important tip for carbon monoxide awareness and safety is this: know what the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning are and pay attention to them. Common symptoms of CO poisoning include headache, weakness/fatigue, nausea/upset stomach, vomiting, chest pain and disorientation. Many times, these symptoms are dismissed as flu symptoms. Be vigilant and if they persist, seek medical attention and then have your home professionally tested for elevated carbon monoxide levels.

We are committed to doing all we can to make sure our customers are safe and protected from the dangers of carbon monoxide. With that in mind, we are offering a hard-to-pass-up promotion on our complete line of Honeywell carbon monoxide detectors.
