Of course, we all know that hope is not a plan, so if your system is not getting the job done, here is a plan: HVAC replacement.
There are several factors to consider and before we get into our things to know before you replace your central AC system, here is one big factor: R-22 refrigerant will be banned effective Jan. 1, 2020. This means that it will no longer be made and repairs for R-22 systems will become problematic and quickly impossible. Most systems 10 years or older are fueled by R-22, so if yours fits that bill, it is a candidate for replacement.
That said, there are some things to know before you replace your Central AC system:
Timeline
If your unit is still operational and you are just getting a head start, kudos to you, but still establish a timeline of how long the process and installation will take and plan accordingly.
Is Repair An Option?
Determine what the issues are and then investigate whether a repair is a better option.
System Size
This is a big question…after all, you want to make sure the new installation is powerful enough and tailored to meet your home’s needs.
Budget
This may be a bigger question and will depend on size, model, efficiency rating, etc.
Air Quality
Have you tested your indoor air quality in your home? If not, make sure you did this prior to making the decision. Newer systems can come with air quality control options as well as other enhanced efficiency and health solutions. In the meantime, remember that regular HVAC maintenance and changing your air filters will help improve and keep your air quality at a healthy level.
